Jacksonville Oregon: A Floral Design Challenge

Juleianna, of Petali, and I have challenged each other to create a weekly floral arrangement using local blooms found in Southern Oregon. This was our first week and the perfect week to begin. Trees are covered with spring blooms, bulbs are out and with each day there are more blooms to draw inspiration from.

Yesterday I set out on the town gathering blooming branches from fallen limbs, greens from the sparse landscape at my rental and daffodils and hellebores from a local nursery. I scored an inexpensive glass vase from The Grange, created my design and roped Dane Corry into traveling around town and photographing it on every street corner and back alley that caught our interest.

This was Danes first attempt at photographing flowers; he experimented with several lenses, the fisheye lens was one of his favorites, and worked with the disappearing light of a stormy day. We quickly hustled around town from corner to corner with Roo, our sweet and patient puppy. Hurrying to catch light and then patiently waiting for it to return from behind a cloud.  The hustle and the wind lead to rearranging of the flowers as necessary. We got carried away and took hundreds of photos, I tried to narrow them down…

You can find Juleianna and her designs on instagram @petalifloral and on her website http://www.petalifloral.wordpress.com.  I’m looking forward to getting creative and experimenting more next week, this was fun!

Santa Fe Wedding

A recent trip to Santa Fe was an inspiring break from the snowy mountains of Jackson. I left town hours before a storm dumped feet of snow in Jackson, and arrived hours later in sunny and 60’s Albuquerque. With my winter boots and down jacket’s layered, I began to strip with delight. It felt like spring time!

Our family was gathering in Santa Fe to celebrate my grandfather’s 80th birthday. Past and future rafting trips, camping adventures, car rides, meals, college days were all recounted by the crowd. Throughout the evening a delightful rumor was started that my Cousin planned to have a “surprise wedding” while we were all visiting. In the next days the official announcement was made, and just like that we were pulling together a wedding.

Paige and I spent the morning of her wedding day wandering downtown Santa Fe searching for flowers, cakes and gathering the wedding bands. With he help of Google we found a beautiful flower shop, Artichokes and Pomegranates. We searched the walk in cooler, finding unique blooms and greens in just the colors we wanted. Then we moved on to the their endless ribbon collection and found all the necessary tools for building her bouquet.

Finding cacti, cars and beautiful stucco walls for our backdrop.  DSC_0505 DSC_0523   DSC_0536Then it was off to the wedding. After an intimate ceremony we all joined in for an incredible dinner with family and friends. I have seen an insane amount of weddings in the last seven years. This one goes down in the memory books. Best one yet. Congratulations Paige and Chris! DSC_0658

Wyoming Love

A collision of worlds. James blunt was in town filming his new video. Good friends Sarah and Tim got married and went to celebrate at the Stage Coach Bar, where the video crew and James were wrapping their final shots. With a spontaneous song and dance came the new ending to the video! Watch for the bouquet toss at the end…even though you can’t see it, I’m still excited to say a Flowers by Chloe bouquet made it into the video. Congratulations Sarah and Tim! What a night to remember.
